I'd forgotten about booking a boat for the first day of the annual Llyn Brenig pike fishing festival so had a mad rush getting the gear together on Sunday night. I'm fishing with my brother and luckily we ditched the dead baits (and associated baggage) a few years ago so it's three lure rods; two lightish and a heavy beast for throwing bull dawg lures.
I've fished the festival during the diaries once before and from memory bagged a few to 13lbs or so. Brenig is one of the biggest reservoirs in the UK and is only pike fished once a year but has performed pretty poorly in truth for a water continually stocked with stocky rainbows swimming round looking up for pellets while danger lurks beneath...
I'm probably wrong but only 2-3 twenties have come out over the years and there just must be bigger lumps out there - sitting beneath the trout nets in the no fish zone is my guess.
Anyhow, we're not half bad at this now and I can report that despite rubbish weather (as usual)and the dock Linford Christies setting off on the B of the Bang and bagging all the quiet bays to sit there ALL DAY on deads catching jack all; the Fish brothers managed to defy the odds and be top guns for the day!
There was a bit of whining on the dock at close of play but despite not bagging a whale the key to this place seems to be to cover as much ground as possible. This strategy worked well through the day despite almost killing us while trying to troll the bottom end of the reservoir in the teeth of a gale. Four foot waves and heavy rain - triffic - and then the bloody rod goes off - a 3 lb+ trout has devoured a 7 ins Muskie lure.
Anyhow nowhere near breaking my personal PB of 17lbs or so but fish caught in every corner of the lake below:-
10am - pike 9lbs - Cisco Blue Bull Dawg.
12.00 - pike 8lbs - Fox Jointed Pig.
1.00pm - trout 2-3 lbs - Husky Jerk Purple
2.30 pm - trout 3lbs+ - Big M.
3.00pm - pike 3lbs - Big M.
4.00 pm - pike 2.5lbs - Fox Jointed Pig.
No monsters but not a bad day. Back to sorting that PB grayling out then...
Cheers
